Reuniting

It's been one week since returning to India and what an amazing trip it's been so far! It took a couple of days to adjust to the craziness of Kolkata which can be somewhat of a sensory overload when you've been living in Boulder for the last year and a half. Yet, you do adjust and somehow playing chicken with an oncoming bus is suddenly no big deal. All of that being said, I love it here because I love what we came for...the girls. What a joy it was to reunite with them.

The Quilt

In one week I will be returning to India with the organization Made by Survivors. With me, I will be bringing a quilt. This quilt was my arts and crafts project from last year’s trip where I had each child put their handprint, name and fantastic decorations on a 6x6 piece of cloth. Every single one was so fun and creative and the pieces came out absolutely beautiful. But, when I got home there was one problem….

With Love from Kolkata!!!!

Hello from Kolkata!!  We have been working at the shelters now for four days and it has been such an incredible experience.  Three of the days I have worked at Womens Interlink International, about an hour and a half outside of the city.  There are about 100 girls currently living at the shelter.  The girls are surviviors of trafficking, orphaned because of AIDS or taken in because they were at high risk of being trafficked.  There was one little girl who was rescued right before being auctioned off, her pr

Arrived in Kolkata!

After a long trip we have finally made it to Kolkata!  It in unlike anywhere I have ever been before, there is so much going on everywhere you look.   The taxi ride from the airport to the hotel was insane.  I have never experienced anything quite like it.  We were swerving all over the roads at high speeds while cutting off cars by inches and blaring on the horn.  I was pretty certain we were gonna hit something or someone at anytime.  Did I mention there are no seat belts???  It was a nail biter but

Bernadette's Blog, Kolkata 2010

About five years ago I read the book Slave by Mende Nazer and Damien Lewis. I remember being both deeply shocked and moved by Mendes story. I was intrigued…. modern day slavery??? I needed to learn more so I kept reading books on the subject. A couple I recommend are Sold by Zana Mushen and Andrew Crofts, and Not for Sale by David Batstone. Once I realized how prevalent modern day slavery was I decided to try and become more involved. I started by attending a human trafficking forum in Boston where I first met Sarah.
