Good to be back!

Today we spent the morning with the children at Child Care Home, which is a shelter located in the city with about 70 children in it. It was so nice to see the children again and I am grateful to be back! The wonderful progress of the programs and obvious heart that is put into them is wonderful to see.

That's what it's all about!

It is hard to believe that in just a week and a half I’ll be back in India. The images of big smiles and bright eyes that have filled my world since I left will again be real and joined with sounds of laughter and songs like the “Hokey Pokey” which was a huge hit the last time I was there.

Broken down and patched up better than before..

Today the heat and lack of sleep got to me when I broke some blisters on my hands while gardening today. I was so frustrated because we had only just begun and I was eager to literally get my hands dirty doing something for the girls, and I knew I was finished. I had no gloves and had to wash out the blisters and splinters with alchol wipes which hurt like heck.

The Future...

Today was another amazing day at Nigoloy! I was again blown away by the amount of joy that radiates from the girls there. When we first arrived we had a little quiet time with a handful of girls and I brought out some tops to play with. The girls of course were expert spinners and had them going on their palms and upside down, each time proudly getting our attention to show off their tricks. It was a sweet time of bonding.

My heart is so full!

Today we met the women and children at Nigoloy. We were greeted with flowers and welcomed into their home with smiles and a warmth that is difficult for me to express with words. We were wrapped in love the entire time we were there. Today we had enough time to meet them, have a tour and dance. The children are amazing dancers! (Our dancing was not so amazing, but our lack of grace was overshadowed by the spirit we put into it.)

The blockprinting they do is beautiful and I can't wait to stock up on sari's! Our day was full of smiles and laughter. Tomorrow we will start some projects at Nigoloy and I can't wait to get back! When we drove away from them today I was in awe of the amount and love and joy they have within them and share so freely. (I also realized that my face hurt from smiling so much.)

This day was a beautiful affirmation of why we do what we do. My heart is full and my hands are ready to get to work!

Dancing for Freedom!

With our trip to India in August fast approaching and also knowing the great need for funding right now, Shaylah and I decided to make a leap of faith and organize a fundraising event for TEN. Our "Dance For Freedom" is shaping up to be quite an amazing evening with dinner, dancing, live Big Band Jazz followed by DJ, silent auction etc.. as always, I am blown away by the out pouring of generosity and support I receive when I step out of that comfort zone and ask for help.

Reflecting on 2009

Reflecting on 2009 and the year of change it has been, I keep coming back to the faces, smiles, stories and hopefulness of the people we help through MadeBySurvivors.

Open House, Open Mouth...

I certainly am not an expert on human trafficking. I am, however, a modern day abolitionist. That is a statement I never thought I'd be making until 8 months ago when Sarah Symons touched my heart with her words. Although I still feel like I'm shaking the sand out of my hair from having my head buried in it for so long, I know that I too need to use words and speak from my heart to touch others. It is not something that I am necessarily good at, but God gave me this wonderful stubborn streak and tenacity that helps me overcome my insecurities when there is a greater purpose involved. Finding the opportunity to reach others is the challenge.
