The Best Welcome Gift

My first day with the survivors at Women's Interlink Foundation's Child Care Home (CCH) was amazing. The warm welcome was overwhelming, and it wasn't the beautiful songs, traditional dances and hand painted cards they prepared for me that really filled my heart, although that was all really wonderful. It was the outpouring of affection and excitement that was so amazing.

Naturally, with most of the survivors, the impact of the abuse they endured is very great and there is often a physical wall there, certainly an uneasiness of being touched. Last trip it was a challenge to help the girls saw, and as a teacher I had to be careful to respect their space even when I had to get close to help with a certain task. I was aware not make abrupt movements near them and had to be very aware of my proximity and make sure they didn't become uncomfortable or frightened; even by actions like standing over their shoulders to view their work. Upon my departure last trip, there were certainly many hugs, but also, still an understandable timidness from some of the girls.

That has certainly changed. When I came through the massive iron gate at CCH, the a first young woman from the Jewelry Program flew into my arms yelling "Auntie!!". Then another and another. Then, the boldest woman of the group (and sometimes the harshest, and, certainly the most difficult by a landslide), came charging out of the jewelry studio and came crashing into me with a huge smile and massive hug. Certainly a change from the timid handshake but warm smile I received on my last departure. What a treat! I found out a little later, she was running a fever and still dragged herself through a Kolkata commute to see me! When I told her I was thrilled to see her, but that I though she should go lie down and rest...flat out refusal, she was staying.

I am so happy I have their trust, which is just the best gift I could possibly receive.
