Destiny's New Mascot
A few weeks ago, I came into our office and heard what sounded like a kitten crying. But to my surprise, one of the women came downstairs carrying a puppy. He is what the Indians call a "deshi kutta" country dog or "neri kurkur" bald dog. Basically, a street dog. Apparently they had heard him crying outside and went to find him. He had been put in a box by some of the local children, who said his mother either died or abandoned him. But these children were abusing the poor puppy, throwing stones at him and hitting him with sticks was what they called "playing." Plus, he was covered in bugs; and not just fleas. Every imaginable type of insect was crawling on this month-old pup. After one look at him, we decided to take him in. The women named him "Niyoti" which means Destiny, and he's been living at my flat for the last month. We nicknamed him "shushu" which means pee-pee because he isn't quite yet potty-trained. Every Saturday I take Shushu to the office to play with the women.
Shushu has been pretty spoiled by the young woman who is living with me. She certainly loves playing with him and feeding him all kinds of Bengali food. Last night I woke up at 4:30am to hear her singing an Arabic song to him, and when she had run out of Arabic words she kept the tune but sang, in English, "Baby puppy, baby puppy, No biting, no biting."
It's amazing to see how caring these women are towards the puppy, because unfortunately many Indians treat the street animals cruelly. Even the young woman living with me said in her Muslim community, they cannot touch any dogs before meals or prayers. They are considered extremely dirty and a sin against Allah to dirty themselves before offering prayers. But these women have a totally different outlook on life - if they see anybody, or anything, in need they want to help. They also love watching him grow, totally fascinated by his ability to eat an entire plate of chowmein. Now if only we could get him potty-trained...
