According to Michael David Sturlin, the motif is a symbolic representation of energy and movement, of life force and life journey. The elemental symbolism: earth, wind, water, and flame suggest, transformation, development, expansion, evolution, and fulfillment. Chasing and Repousse are ancient metalsmithing techniques that are complimentary to each other, and together, emboss metal. Goldsmiths traditionally make their own chasing and repousse tools, each chisel-like tool is shaped with and polished with files, grinders and sandpaper and after use continually cared for, smoothed out and flaws removed. Each tool is used with hammer on the malleable metal making deliberate marks: channels, grooves and indentations. Different tools have different shapes to create different marks and textures. This series by Michael David Sturlin are a beautiful example of a meticulously chased work of art.
